Each time we encounter something, if we are not present with what is happening, we tell ourselves a story about it.
Two people can experience the same thing, at the same time, in the same way and each of them will view it through their perception filter, or whatever program they are running.
Their minds and the stories it tells them will dictate how they experience, view and remember each encounter.
Here is a basic example.
Two friends are enjoying a cup of tea at a cafe.
One lady is noticeably larger than the other lady and both walk in wearing the same shade of purple. However, once seated, one of the ladies takes of her jacket and is now wearing white, while the other lady has left her purple jacket on.
They both order tea and one of them orders cake.
The waiter comes over with the cake and automatically puts it down in front of the larger lady.
She smiles and tells the waiter it is not for her it is for her friend.
The waiter apologises, fixes the mistake and leaves.
The waiter thought the larger lady had ordered the cake as she was wearing purple and that is how she remembered where to take the cake. She didn't notice the other lady had taken off her purple jacket.
She made the error purely out of her memory of colour. There was nothing more to it. The waiter walked away and never gave it another thought.
The larger lady is devastated inside, she becomes very uncomfortable. She is not happy with the way she looks, and so a program of self hate of her body is running.
She starts to think that the waiter gave her the cake because "she was the fat one" and of course she would be the one eat cake. "Of course you would choose me, I look like the one to eat the whole cake...I don't even like cake but that doesn't matter because I am fat". Her thoughts continue and begin to circulate self hate, you get the idea, we have all had a mind that has turned on us.
Her friend, who is the one who spoke with the waiter and ordered the cake, is upset at being mistaken for her friend who is obviously far larger than her. Her story is about never being good enough.
"Oh my god, I spent ages getting ready today only to be told I look fat. How embarrassing, now I don't even want to eat the cake. How could I possibly look that overweight, etc It is always me, no matter what I do, no one ever gives me credit, I work so hard at looking good and I still look terrible."
Each of them viewed a simple moment and translated it to suit their own story.
How powerful is the mind? How powerful is its ability to twist something meaningless into something that reinforces its own belief?
That is what our minds do if we leave them unattended.
That is why we question the truth of what we find ourselves thinking.
It is simple, question your mind, be ever aware to the story that is being told in any given moment.
If it comes from the mind, you will find it isn't true.
Keep it simple and start where you are now.
In the moments of expansion, in complete clarity, have you ever had a sense of losing "yourself"?
Have you ever just experienced being, so much so that the "I" you relate to has just disappeared?
One morning, I awoke with the understanding that the "I" which was my identity, the thought in my mind, "I should get up, I should make the bed" was not the truth.
There was a clear awareness which was not the "I" that had been running the show. The "I" who was directing things via thought was not in fact the real deal.
The space, the awareness was before this thought, this identity, yet it seemed to be part of the space. Being the space enabled watching of the "I" thoughts and watching how these thoughts had ruled what was done and when, what was thought and how and what was felt and how strongly.
From this space, the "I" was a foreign system to live by and yet it had been the main experience for the past 40 years. The awareness was now a clearly defined space which contained everything and was of everything.
So in the space, the "I" no longer has ruling over the events. The "I" would still voice its opinion but there was an immediate recognition that it was not to be taken seriously, that it was not to be identified with. It was something else to love, as it was part of the whole. It became a distance voice, sometimes louder but the awareness knew it was all irrelevant.
As the body moved about its interactions with the appearance of the world, the space would be the viewing point. The anchor, the awareness without a centre focus, point of reference would interpret the goings on of the world with love as the filter.
Emotions would arise and fall without the "I" story going on. Ripples or sometimes waves of emotions would wash over or through, never staying, always moving on as they too were part of the experience, rather than the foundation.
Pointing to it, in describing this with words, there is a space around it which is talking to the part of you that already knows this to be true. You already know.
The mind wants to grab and understand everything.
This is outside of the minds capabilities, as I say, it is the wrong tool for the job.
Find out who is thinking. Watch the thoughts pass by, even just one, see if not taking them as "gospel" brings about a change in awareness.
When you are free from the constraints of the mind, life becomes much more joyful, more alive and far less serious, even when it appears to be.
Look for the space.
