The truth and the path is very simple. Most people find it too simple and look to complicate it. The mind loves to feel useful and feel in control. The mind can only be in the past or the future, it can never be about now. It's always thinking about what happened, what could have happened, what might happen, what it would do if something happened, who said what to who, analysing, judging, commenting etc, it's noise is endless.
The mind and your story tends to keep you trapped in the cycle of thought. The mind likes to keep it interesting.... for the mind,....keep you "learning lessons" and " healing". Its far more simple than that. If you allow yourself to move away from thought and to begin with just simply watch your breath, your experience of life will begin to deepen.
A quiet mind allows the ever present to be heard and followed. As your mind grows quiet, the stillness deepens, you may notice your awareness expands and things start to change, both within yourself and in the outside world.
I have recognised that many people feel quite unnerved without a busy mind at first. The space is uncomfortable and they feel the need to fill it. Learning to relax into the space takes practice. I call it simply reversing the habit. You have created the habit of obsessive thinking, now practice being away from thought.
"It's very easy for people to become distracted, the mind is a great manipulator of truth. If you search through the mind for who you really are, you will search eternally. The mind cannot understand, it is the wrong tool for the job...but it will tell you a good story!! It's removing yourself from the story that will set you free. The mind is a tool for the functioning of the body and operating in the world of time but immersion and identification with the mind/ thoughts is what stops people from discovering their true freedom."
